                      Barbour Hall Military

1940's era brochure showing the color guard in dress uniform.  Note that the purpose of the school was "for the building of character"

Most all my very fond memories of Michigan begin here at Barbour Hall Military Academy.

There is a long stretch of blank memory since shortly after coming home for Christmas on Larry Fruehaufs plane, I caught Polio, or it caught me. I have a few very memorable moments while going to Barbour Hall but they are getting very vague as I get older. I was just a little kid and the entire memory is best described as ‘special’. Everything done in miltary style at a very early age, making my bed, marching, Taking my little leather case with my soap and wash clothe to the wash rooms. Going to church for this and that and getting my hands slapped with a foot long, 2 pound ruler. Dressing up very neatly and going off to the mess hall with a hundred other boys all very prim and proper and very army like.

Two things come to mind as I look back and one was when the Nuns took us out to go sledding. One very snowy day one of my classmates sledded head first into the barbed wire fence. Another time and another Nun, we were all gathered out back again in the middle of winter and were told to gather round while a classmate had his mouth washed out with soap. All I can remember is what ever he said I was not going to say, and since I didn’t know what he said I avoided anything that sounded like I should have my mouth washed out with soap.

In late 1951 I caught Polio on a flight home in a big ole two prop plane that was owned by the Fruehaufs. I remember landing at the Detroit airport in the late evening, my parents driving up in their old and battered 1948 Ford and this great big old black limo driving up to take Larry off to his parents.

Photo says 1949 but as I piece the puzzle together it seems to me to be more like 1951. I would have been 5 in 49 so that seems far fetched.

Most of the photos I borrowed from a web site I found that is hanging on with some of the old memories. Hopefully I will find a few classmates from around the time I experienced Barbour Hall.

Alfred [Fred] B. Keller 1944-1947 [5/03]

In the picture sent by Harvey Stapleton entitled "Barbour Hall Junior Military School", "For the Building of Character" depicting the color guard I am the one carrying the American flag. At that time I was Alfred B.Keller but since have dropped th "AL" and now am known as Fred B Keller. I would sincerly like a copy of that original photo, if possible, and willing to cover any costs involved. A printout from the website leaves much to be desired. I do believe the cadet to the right is Henry Arnoldy as we were close friends and for a couple of summers spent time with his family in Detroit and mine in Buffalo,NY.For any and all who may remember me or recall the years 1944 thru 1947 please E-Mail me at WWW.FredFBK@aol.com Please use "Barbour Hall" as a ID to avoid cancellation as "SPAM" or other non essential mail

I RECENTLY WAS LOOKING THROUGH SOME OLD ALBUMS
OF PHOTOS OF MY DAYS AT BARBOUR HALL, 1948-1951,
WHICH BROUGHT BACK SOME WONDERFUL MEMORIES.
I SHALL ALWAYS CHERISH THOSE DAYS. I WROTE TO THE
SISTERS, THERE AT NAZARETH, AND ASKED IF THEY WOULD
BE INTERESTED IN RECEIVING THESE PHOTOS FOR THEIR
MEMORABILIA ROOM ON BARBOUR HALL. IS THE WEB SITE
STILL ACTIVE, THAT IS TO SAY, RESPONSIVE TO COMMUNICATION, AS I UNDERSTAND FROM SOME OF MY FELLOW CADETS OF THE PAST THAT THEY WROTE AND
RECEIVED NO REPLY. I KNOW BARBOUR HALL IS NO LONGER PHYSICALLY THERE AND THAT MUCH OF THE COLLEGE IS INACTIVE, AS WELL AS MANY OF THE NUNS
SINCE VATICAN II., HAVE LEFT THE ORDER. PLEASE WRITE
TO UPDATE ME. THANK YOU, DEANO GAMBLE

Having sent the pictures in for the 57 Mother s Day Parade, I would also like to comment about my time at BHJM. Next to being baptized Catholic, it was the biggest favor my parents ever did for me. The eight years I spent there ( 49 to 57) were some of the best of my life. Though only a day student, I felt that I was a part of something really special. I don t know what things were like in the 40s, but I would surmise that that school kept more of my classmates out of therapy than in. (See Joe Fay s note). My memories are still crystal clear of those wonderful years. Sisters Magdelena, Bartholomew, Rose Catherine, and Hubert were just wonderful to me while in the Junior Division. Later, Mother Theodora, Sister Justine Marie, and Mr. Clark and Mr. Christensen made the last 4 years a joy. I owe my life of interest and participation in music to Sister Angus and Mr. Bob Sanders. And then there was Sister Christine. That wonderful woman made an impression on me that has lasted throughout my life. Beside the 7th and 8th grade studies, she instilled in me a love for God, country, and respect for self and others that has formed my life ever since. Our eldest daughter was named for her. To all of those people I owe my thanks and my life. Robert E. Lee, MD

Joe Fay

I don't know why after 69 years I got up this morning and began looking for traces of Barbour Hall, but I'll tell you, a wasn't prepared to see a couple of pictures of myself on your site, as well as some old familiars. Firstly, the "Cadet Officers 1945...third from the left...myself, Joseph Fay (rhymes with 'Say'") and all but Stanley Jurcik (sp??) are familiar to me. The chap named Anton Garrow's last name is Guerra which you may know is "war" in Spanish. I remember him as a very dignified person whose father I only saw once and remember as clearly as the day I met him. He was a very short, extremely elegant man in a goatee who could have been the ruler of any latin American republic. A remarkable presence. And then the Eady brothers, Gil and James...very familiar...and where are they now? I am in Healdsburg, CA and have been out here in this state since graduating from Michigan State Univ. in '59. I was lucky enough to be sent out here to the Army Language School in Monterey after my enlistment during the Korean war and upon discharge couldn't return fast enough. Never that fond of Michigan. And, ljh, I can't seem to find your name on the site.  I am almost certain that in the flag carrying picture that I am the one with the school flag. If it is 1945 or earlier then it is probably of me. (My friend identifies it for sure.) Any way of checking? I graduated as a first lieutenant. If you want to see a current picture of me there is one on a website which can be reached at www.paintingsdirect.com and then typing in Joe Fay under "artists." The picture was taken two years ago.  My recollections of Barbour Hall are not really that pleasant, but I guess I have always been curious of the outcomes of some of the others in terms of survivorship, for lack of a better word. Once, when I was describing my life at Barbour Hall to someone as a Catholic, military boarding school, the listener replied, "My God, what were they preparing you for...the Children's Crusade?" Anyway, we all move on, including Sister Augustine who has provided me and a number of therapists with a lot of interesting material to reflect upon.  In any event, many thanks for your effort in assembling and maintaining all of this material. ...I hope that I hear more from you about what you have managed to dig up and who's where. Since I didn't receive a reply I figured that the whole thing had been set up a long time ago and the site's originators were "no longer with us." In any event, I see that more photos (in color) have been added...later than my time there, and noticing that no corrections in identifying me or Anton had been made I figured that my message had somehow been lost. But there you are and now I am wondering if any of my former classmates are still around, or even living in my neighborhood.  Thanks again for replying and I hope to hear further from you in the near future. > > Regards, Joe Fay

more from Jim:
Found the web site....few pictures...but the few you had moved me ..big  time[tears..oh yes]. By the way 'cadette' is spelled 'cadet'...the other  has perhaps some reference to dancing dollies or a German Opel car model;and while I'm at it .."Henry Arnoldy" [or some such] was really Henry> Arnold...like in 'Hank Arnold'[he was a bruiser!]! OK in your margin there's the bouncy little "you never write...you never> call'....well let's be honest Barbour Hall dropped the ball big time years  ago . Many of us were still adolescents in the 50's and 6o's and had little > to say about alumni 'biznis' etc. What a shame. So who am I? I'm Jim Quinlan, Class of 1950 & Cadet Capt. Co. 'A'. Where am I? Kalispell,Montana. What did I do? Oh boy...where to start??? Army hitch > 1958-1964 Sgt. 9th Inf Div. 47th Inf Regiment- 'in country'}Dong Tam,  Republic of Vietnam. Raised a bunch of kids... who are now spread from  Oregon to Denmark-took a BA from Aquinas College [Pol Sc]'65/ MA CMU  '97[Humanities] -worked in mfg for a few yrs before focusing on education> from which I retired after 32 super years [Ludington HS-Ludington,MI]-. Fancy myself a future Park Ranger @ the Little Big Horn Battlefield, Crow Agency,Montana...summer temp job.  Loved the pix of class of '48...they were the upper classmen. When I saw  their faces it all came rushing back like it was only a year that had  passed. I recall how we pasted together our own yearbooks....oh whatever happened to mine??? Is it possible to obtain a copy of our class photo[1950]? My class mates...they were as dear to me as my buds in the Army years later  for we went thru a 'crucible' together. Do you have a current list of BH boys from 1950...or even 1949 [my cousin > Bob McClellan's class]. And thank Harvey Stapleton for me.....I remember Harvey very well...tall,  skinny, good natured lad. Do write me back.
