Samantha right. In 1996 we lost four, fourteen-year-old dogs to euthanasia. Not a fun year. That left us with Samantha, a Lab - Shepherd - Hound mix whom we had fostered and then adopted from the animal shelter. Sam is our "alpha" dog now by virtue of her tenure. She likes to hunt and does a pretty good job with pheasants. She hunted minimally in 1998 . . . she had developed some arthritis and possibly hip dysplasia. Glucosomine has made a big improvement in her activity and she returned to hunting in October 1999. Today at eight she is frisky again and maintaining on a small amount of glucosomine daily.

This is Smokey, right photo, our January 1999 rescue. He came from a neglectful home. He has come a long way in social graces, having been aggressive and a wanderer. Today he is our most demonstrably affectionate dog. With high ball drive, Smokey is our athlete. He will catch flying discs, tennis balls, whatever. His favorite four seasons activity is rolling an eighteen-inch purple ball over hill and dale. He barks it along and steers it like a soccer pro.

Gerda (top photo) came to us in April of 1996. The animal shelter phoned to ask that we foster a dog for a short while to help them get through a week of overcrowding. When Richard arrived at the shelter, this magnificent German Shepherd female chose him and bonded with him before they got out the door. Gerda means "Emblem of Peace." She is around eight, weighs 98 pounds, is well pigmented, and has the flying trott.

And here we are (front to back) are Boone, Smokey, Samantha, and Gerda ready to give me (Richard) a workout. I love to walk them down our country road and see the double takes of motorists as they pass us. I have learned not to walk Boone and Smokey on the same lead! One day they saw a rabbit cross the road. I'm gonna get a cape for one of two of them that adverdtises my training services!
