About

Pianist - Guitarist - Writer - Singer

Steven McCallum was born into a family of professional jazz musicians and began performing over forty-five years ago as a child. Working first as a drummer, he moved through guitar and mandolin to piano, where he found an affinity that probably goes back to listening to his mother play piano in his father’s bands before he was born near Detroit, Michigan. After moving to Washington State, he honed his craft in many working groups, and first recorded with Absolute Elsewhere in 1982. Steven now resides in Marseille, France, where he has found ready acceptance and enthusiastic responses from lovers of American music. With a voice ranging from velvet smooth to whiskey strong, Steven entertains audiences of all ages and tastes from a list of more than 200 hits, standards, and originals.

Log Cabin and stoveIn Washington State Steven hand-built a log home to raise his two children, while booking and performing in local bands. He next lived in the San Juan Islands of Puget Sound, sometimes commuting to gigs on his sailboat. When he moved to Eugene, Oregon, he led many rock, blues, and jazz combos and played percussion in an orchestra while also teaching adults with disabilities in the community college.
His current band Steven McCallum & Friends has been asked to return everywhere they have performed and their recordings communicate love of life and joy in music. He can play with subtlety and emotion from his jazz and R&B roots, and with the excitement and enthusiasm of early rock and blues. His original songs tell the story of his search for love and happiness expressing deep emotions and encompassing many styles and forms. He is a consummate professional and every performance is like there is no tomorrow.
